Why...

Post by *Hule* on Wed Nov 10, 2010 9:43 am

Why do people always long for the past times? They always go like 'ah, the good old days, wish they were here' and all that. I admit it, I do it too pretty often.
But why is that? The past is gone, we should concentrate on the present and the future in order to accomplish good things. Without concentrating on the present there won't be good old times to remember anymore really.
It bugs me, that people often live in the past, but what bugs me even more is that I myself like it that much to take a moment recalling the good old times.

Moreover, all the good things that happen are surely nice when thay happen, but always top nice when some years have passed and we know that they will never come back.

every choice you make is based on past experiences.. so you can't focus on the future and present without neglecting the past.
Anyway, I think about past all the time. what choices I made.. what I could have done better.. and then think how I'll take on the situation this time.

"Moreover, all the good things that happen are surely nice when thay happen, but always top nice when some years have passed and we know that they will never come back."
I don't really understand what you mean here? Are you saying that it is better when you know good moments don't come back? xD

One question for you.. why do you think about these things, you're going to drive yourself crazy! Very Happy

Bad things of the past get filtered by cognitive osmosis. Nostalgia is what's left.

That's the least meaningful sentence I have ever heard in my life.

I was just thinking about that the other day. Why do people only remember the good side of past experiences and why do we want to go back to them? I have it myself too: I think about high school as something I want to go back to, while I know that when I was in there, I wanted to get out as fast as possible. I think it's something in the brain that is evolutionarily evolved to make life bearable. Sucks if it's true because it adds to the subjectivity of experiences.

No no, not exactly. What I mean is that when a certain thing happens, awesome or less awesome, it's nice of course and we should and do make the best of it. BUT, when time passes the memory of the thing becomes even more golden and we get that "ah that was nice, wish it was like that now too".
Why can't we get the "awesome" feeling that strong when the thing actually happens. xD

Don't know, I just like to play with things like these and make the easiest of things complicated every once a while. Razz
But seriously, it's fun to think about things like these that you seldom would bother your mind with.

I guess because at that moment you don't think about that current moment... xD

Perhaps..
Anyway, I think it's cool to think of the past things and feel the nostalgy, but if it goes to such extent that you're longing the past all day long it's no good.

I would also like to add the concoction that people usually feel like passed decades had a higher overall cultural value and authenticity that the current time they are in, even though their own present generation will one day be looked upon as such.

I don't think that is exactly what Hule meant.. That girl is just lying lol, but this is about craving to the past experiences.

Re: Why...

Post by *Hule* on Thu Nov 11, 2010 6:22 am

I found a good example, clipped it off from another thread. (Note that the content of the quote other than what is currently 'on the table', is irrelevant)

If I'm not too busy playing the awesomeness that's Black Ops I might be there. For old times' sake.

You see? Again, doing something for old times' sake like that does give an impression that something is done in order to accomplish something similar than in the past.
It tells me that the good old times are wanted back because they were nice, but in reality it can never actually be exactly the same as in the past, even in the level of feeling whatsoever. It'll always be at least a bit different, no matter how hard you try and copy a thing in the past.

So, why not do something for 'the present times' sake' really? I mean, even the nostalgy that we get from copying the acts in the past is felt in the present. Thus, in the end we ARE doing these things for the sake of the present (in order to feel the nostalgy), although the source would be a thing in the past.
