College Life

Post by Boomlala on Fri Sep 24, 2010 2:12 pm

Whoop whoop. Had my first cantus, became a member of a student circle, had a 3-day orientation event with them, moved into my dorm, have several parties/events lined up for this week. Already have to study up on complex numbers though.

Sounds cool, mates. Had I gotten in the Uni to study English I would've started some month ago already. Too bad I didn't get in, though. Well, maybe next year then. tongue

Thought to as well share this here rather than in a topic of its own, that I'm starting my job tomorrow. Well, actually it's not a 'real' job as I'm not in any kind of a contract with the employer. Instead, it's a 'practical training' of some sort that I got through the employment agency. This means that I have fewer working hours and get paid way less than what I would get in a working contract.
I'll get ~30€/day minus taxes, and it doesn't come from the employer but from the Social insurance insititution of Finland.

It's not nearly as good as a real job would be, but it's definitely something. Way better than sitting at home all day long doing nothing. At least I get a rythm to my life, if you know what I mean, and get a little salary in addition. Razz
I'm in search of a real workplace in the meantime, naturally.

Posting from my dorm, with the super flashy dorm internet.

I tried getting a summer job this year, couldn't find any.

3 year BA, 1 year MA. But Lone's program will change to 2 year MA soon, so he will have 5 years total, which is the norm for Belgian Master degrees.

yes OK, but before shity bologne system uni lasted 4 years and MA additional 1 year. And before shity bologne system there was no 3 year uni program.

and btw...bologne system is shit. I see some younger guyz and girls who graduated and have no idea what they were studying for 3 years. So sad. I blame it on bologne.

Re: College Life

Post by daryo on Tue Sep 28, 2010 5:31 am

for one it was harder
professors expected much more from you

and now it's like they put all the courses from classic uni programme (4) in bologne 3+2. all is easier so ppl can finish quickly and europe gets more "educated" population. Bollocks. Its like a diploma factory.

I finished classic...but couldnt go to classic MA couz they canceled it. Now im redoing almost same courses again -_-' on bologne. Bollocks again.

So i stopped at last two courses (cba anymore...too hard with the job and everything) so im gonna finish in Spain with diferent courses.

Unfortunately, the French is just too damn hard for me.. Some classes are just too plain boring (like statistics, accountancy and economics..) So I threw in the towel.
I'm going to file in my resignation tomorrow.. :<

Future plans.. part time work for half a year.. a year.. Until I figure out what I want to do with my life.

You do/did marketing right?

I have statistics in the second semester this year. Corporate economy (bedrijfskunde, don't know how to properly translate that) as well. Actually sounds like an interesting subject.

My current subjects are pretty swell. General Chemistry is fantastic (learned about the Schrödinger equation yesterday, and Heidenberg's uncertainty principle, shit was so cash), Computer Science is easy (with 3 years of C++ experience and all), and I'm starting my engineering project this monday (about light phenomena).

Math Fundamentals is heavy though. Very intense 3 week course, I have my exam this Saturday. Ruins the fun.

Yes I did. Those subjects were boring, because of the teachers.. I'm quite sure I would enjoy it more and possibly not fall asleep (along with the rest of the class) with someone interesting speaking.

Statistics so far: combination shit... ( Combinatie, variatie, permutatie enzo... xD)

I don't know what will happen to me.. but perhaps someday I'll find something I really enjoy studying.. :/
I've got some mixed feelings.. I know I won't make it, but then again.. I never failed a school year... Failing school is just not an option, it feels like.. I feel I'm failing on my parents and friends, but of course they understand.. Still the feelings stay.. :<

I'm having a hard time at school too :s
I'm getting lots of homework and tests. They want us to keep up with studying.
Learning Russian turns out to be quite difficult and French is a mostly bullshit with some good stuff.
It's really tiring and I feel like I don't have enough time to combine school and life. I doubt if I'll pass my exams this christmass but I'll try anyway.
